PageRank vs Pepsi

I recently heard a SEO newbie complaining that people cared about PageRank when they shouldn't. His logic was that nobody knows about PageRank. Only a select few SEO's have heard about PageRank, so it shouldn't matter to anyone.

Google shows 63,000,000 results for the search term "PageRank". Select few, huh?

Let's compare that to a few other unheard of products. Like, Pepsi. Google returns 20,900,000 results for Pepsi. Looks like Pepsi is even more of an unknown that PageRank!

A search on Google for Ronald Reagan returns 4,670,000 pages; for Bill Clinton, 19,900,000. But then, that's to be expected. Nobody knows of those folks either; only a select few politicians have heard those names.
